SciSys is part of a European-wide consortium that has been established to undertake the development of state-of-art computer vision systems under the auspices of the European Union Framework 7 programme for Space Exploration.
The objective of PRoVisG is to develop technology to better process and visualise past, present and future data products from robotic missions. The project will explore data sets captured across a spectrum of mission cases and investigate their possible processing, data handling and archiving. It will also provide a framework that can be used to process future robotic vision data at an increased rate, so improving future mission lead times. The project also supports the raising of public awareness in such missions through the use of advanced visual tools and will generate procedures for distributing the data and information to the scientific community and the general public.
As part of the team, SciSys is leading the analysis of various robotic missions that perform planetary surface science and evaluating how vision processing is used to fulfill both an engineering (navigation, path planning) and a scientific (target and goal selection) role. From this analysis the project requirements and test scenarios are derived. SciSys is also responsible for testing the final system to ensure the project requirements are met.
