"Drivers will benefit from these cameras as they will enable us to obtain round-the-clock, vital traffic information at short notice, and we can then advise drivers of road conditions ahead. The cameras will also allow us to gather information for longer-term projects, so that we can identify any potential traffic issues on the region's motorways and trunk roads."
Highways Agency Area Performance Manager for Yorkshire and the Humber
The Highways Agency aim is to provide:
- Safe Roads
- Reliable Journeys
- Informed Travelers
The Highways Agency (HA) are using SWORD to extend their vision into areas where the cost of adding conventional powered and networked CCTV is prohibitive.
Deploy Anywhere and Forget
Using a trailer mounted telescopic mast as the platform, powered by solar and wind generators, a pan-tilt-zoom camera dome provides remote surveillance without the cost of expensive fixed infrastructure. Using GPRS and 3G communications, these deployments can relay pictures from anywhere along the HA road network. Typical deployments include temporary networks, or fixed deployments in areas too expensive to contemplate running power or network cables.
Linked into the HANET System
The HANET system provides web access to the HA camera network for HA staff and the media. Using SciSys software experience, images and camera commands are fed through the SWORD server directly to HANET. This end to end SWORD solution helps the Highways Agency to fulfil its remit more effectively by monitoring remote areas and temporary events on the road network at low cost.
